Business Academy
The Business Academy at Luther North will be one of three academies launched in September, 2012. In addition to a full complement of required high school courses in traditional areas like English, math, science, and history, students enrolled in the Academy of Business will participate in elective courses exploring such areas as accounting, banking, credit issues, economics, financial planning, international finance, and securities to name a few. The curriculum is complemented by work-based learning experiences, including job shadowing, that is supported by advisors who are professionals in the business world and lend their time and talent as mentors to participate in this education model.
During their senior year Business Academy students will work as paid interns at banks, insurance companies, accounting firms, government agencies, and finance departments in a variety of corporations and industries. These business partners provide students with paid internships for six to eight weeks so students can receive hands-on exposure, professional supervision, and practical work experience. This opportunity allows students to begin the process of building a resume while exploring their future professional interests. Students are selected for these industry-specific placements on the basis of interviews and their completion of coursework requirements. Students receive high school credit for their internships.
