Jazz Band

The jazz band is an important part of the music program at Luther North that focuses on one of America’s few native art forms: jazz. This group performs two full concerts each year along with a few additional performances.

The jazz band is composed of select musicians from the concert band, but can include other students by audition. Saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, electric bass, and drums are utilized to complete the big band instrumentation. Students learn to perform various genres such as jazz, rock, blues and Latin.

Musically, students who participate in jazz band gain strong reinforcement in the areas of sight-reading, rhythmic understanding, intonation, balance, blend, and leadership through part independence. Coupled with participation in the concert band, the members of the jazz band receive a very well-rounded and enjoyable musical experience.
